that those revenues don’t go far.

There’s probably a lot more to the financial side but as a local volunteer, I can say most of that is opaque to us, sometimes there are larger grants, those usually get publicized, or people even leave money to the shelters and societies in their wills.

A number of the smaller ones don’t stay afloat. The rescue/shelter where I adopted my last rescue from is now gone. I keep a phone file and list of names of shelters and cull it every couple of years, I call the numbers, check their websites, and a sad number of them come up disconnected and gone.
